Advocacy and Communication
Climate change remains the biggest threat of the 21st century. The cost of inaction translates to unbearable consequences for the world, more so in the global south. The IGAD region is committed to playing its role in being part of the solution through enhanced mitigation commitments and pushing the adaptation and loss and damage agenda.
What We Do
- The Centre advocates for raising the adaptation voice at the national, regional, continental and international levels for enhanced response to the climate crisis. Our advocacy focuses on building long-term climate resilience and regional governments lobbying for a united front to limit global greenhouse gas emissions to 1.5°C.
- We advocate for the Principle of Locally Led Adaptation (LLA) rooted in our recognition of the value of local knowledge and expertise to address climate risk and ensure that the communities and groups on the front lines of climate change have access to adaptation finance and decision-making power.
- We advocate for and support efforts to leverage the fourth industrial revolution technologies and innovations to build resilience and enhance adaptive capacity to the impacts of climate change in the IGAD region.
- We recognise that successful climate change adaptation requires an embedded communication component that links research - governments/institutions and communities. This allows and facilitates participatory research and horizontal knowledge sharing and enhances adaptation processes and disaster risk management. We work to support and enhance the climate adaptation communication platforms between member states, regional institutions and communities for effective climate change adaptation in the IGAD region.
