Climate and Security

Climate change threatens human, ecological and member state security due to its function as a ‘threat multiplier’ exacerbating pre-existing societal problems, including resource scarcity, conflicts over local and transboundary resources, environmental degradation and ecosystem collapse, poverty, injustices, and civil wars, among others.

What We Do

  • We support member states with climate adaptation latest research on various sectors, including security, through our partnerships with regional and international research institutions, thus deepening knowledge on how, when and why climate-related security risks arise and how these risks can be mitigated, strengthening human and ecological security and long-term sustainable peace in the region.
  • We support vulnerable populations, including women, IDPs and internally displaced persons, in providing short-term humanitarian needs and long-term goals of enhancing their resilience and resettlement plans.
