Climate-Resilient Infrastructure

Climate change-induced shocks, including floods, sea level rise, storms, droughts and heat waves, poses a significant threat to water, energy, transport, telecommunication, education, and waste infrastructures in the IGAD region. Investment in climate-resilient infrastructure requires long-term sustainability to be included as a core consideration from the earliest stages of infrastructure project planning, thus creating an opportunity to utilise the available resources efficiently and sustainably.

Recent studies have shown that one dollar invested in resilience could save four dollars in post-disaster scenarios. Investment in climate-resilient infrastructure contributes to the attainment of the national development agenda, transition to a low-carbon development pathway in line with Paris Agreement mitigation targets, and sustainable development goals in

What We Do

  • In coordination with member states and partners, we work to reduce the risks or vulnerabilities posed by climate change to critical infrastructures by supporting efforts to climate-proof urban and rural infrastructures, including water, energy, transport, telecommunication, education, and waste, among others.
  • We support sustainability-embedded adaptation planning to enhance resilience in the early stages of infrastructure development.
  • We support member countries with capacity development in adaptation planning, early warning systems and disaster risk management for enhanced climate-resilient infrastructure.
