Gender

Climate change-induced disasters amplify inequalities for women including in access and control of resources, decision making and labour divisions. Women disproportionately use natural resources such as water and firewood at the household level.

Climate change increases the scarcity of these resources forcing women to trek long distances and denying them time for engagement in food production, education and leisure. Gender roles also impact women’s decision-making, thus impacting overall climate adaptation actions.

What We Do

  • IGAD CAEP supports gender mainstreaming in climate change policies and implementing these policies at the local, national and regional levels.
  • We support efforts to empower women-led businesses and girl child education, including migrants, refugees and internally displaced persons in the region.
