The IGAD region remains among the most vulnerable to climate change. The existing health systems are weak, with limited capacities and resources for managing health risks. Climate change exacerbates the health crisis by continuing to change the environmental and social determinants of health for the worse.
Shifts in rainfall and temperature patterns impact food production, nutrition security and water availability. This, in turn, results in increased loss of lives, the prevalence of vector and water-borne diseases, and the over-stretching of health systems during a humanitarian crisis. Climate change-related floods and storms destroy health infrastructure, thus undermining overall health provision goals and increasing the cost of disaster risk management for member states.
