Water Resource Management

Many of the IGAD member states are considered water-scarce countries. High population growth rates, the transboundary nature of key water resources, including Lake Turkana, river Shabelle and the Nile, and unsustainable environmental and water resources management coupled with the impacts of climate change continue to exacerbate water shortages. The resultant competition for control and access to transboundary water resources has recently increased the risk of conflicts between border communities and countries.

What We Do

  • We advocate for an integrated, ecosystem-based, climate-resilient approach to water resources management in the IGAD region.
  • We support the implementation of water sector priorities in National Adaptation Plans and Water Policies and Strategies, including promoting integrated water resource management, water shade management and catchment rehabilitation, and enhancing access to safe drinking water
  • We provide climate adaptation capacity development for member states’ water sector stakeholders.
