Environment Protection
The IGAD region has a diverse environment, with Arid and Semi-Arid Lands being the most prevalent. It is characterised by its diversity of species and ecosystems, with some areas covered by forests, wetlands and highlands. As a result of global climatic changes and human activities impacting natural resources and land use—the IGAD region has experienced alarming levels of environmental degradation.
All IGAD member states have environmental policies aimed at sustainable management of the environment and natural resources. However, challenges exist, including lack of implementation, shortage of capacity and resources, and overall weak governance systems.
There is little doubt that unmitigated environmental deterioration in the region poses significant risks, including increased food shortage, water shortage, conflict over resources, poverty, energy crisis, climate change, migration and displacement, among others.
This, in turn, undermines efforts towards national environmental goals, sustainable development, and regional and international environmental commitments.
As an IGAD Specialized Institution, The Centre of Excellence for Climate Adaptation and Environmental Protection (IGAD CAEP) based in Mogadishu, Somalia, is mandated to coordinate Environmental Protection efforts in the eight IGAD countries comprising Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan and Uganda.
The Centre supports the implementation of environmental policies, undertakes Sustainable Environmental Protection programs and serves as the focal institution for environmental knowledge and capacity development to replicate and scale up sustainable environmental management solutions for the region.
