Water Resource Management

Many of the IGAD member states are considered water-scarce countries. The region’s geographical context, population pressure, environmental degradation, weak regulations, and climate change impacts have exacerbated the threats to water resources. The transboundary nature of key water resources, including the Nile, Lake Turkana, River Shabelle and Lake Victoria, creates complexities in terms of access and control as well.

What We Do

  • We work with member states and partners to support the implementation of water policies, strategies and action plans for sustainable management of water resources.
  • We work with member states and partners to enhance coordination mechanisms to harmonise water management strategies and address conflicts over shared water resources.
  • We support member states with technical and institutional capacity development in the sustainable management of water resources.
  • We work with national, regional and international research institutions to undertake the latest transdisciplinary research on water resources to provide empirical evidence to existing and emerging gaps, challenges and opportunities.
