The IGAD region faces different types of pollution, including water, air and land. Water pollution sources include factories, industries releasing chemicals and radioactive wastes into rivers and oceans, and poor urban liquid waste management. Water pollution impacts include increased waterborne diseases and loss of lives, depletion of safe water supplies, reduced agricultural productivity, and increased cost of water treatment; marine pollution remains one of the most serious environmental pollutions, especially in the Horn of Africa, resulting in the loss of marine biodiversity and economic losses.
Land pollution sources include industries, agriculture, landfills, illegal dumping sites, deforestation, mining, and soil erosion. Land pollution impacts in the region include loss of fertile agricultural land, unsafe drinking water, climate change and endangerment and extinction of species.
Air pollution sources include indoor air pollution, industrial emissions, motor vehicles, burning fossil fuels, wildfires, and open burning of waste, among others. Indoor and outdoor sources combine to make air pollution the second-largest cause of death in the African continent.
